Onsen = hot springs in Japanese

Onsen has long long history and all the Japanese loves them to get relaxed.
There are 8 Onsen areas in Beppu city, and each areas have some onsens. It’s amazing that each of them has different quality of Onsens even if they are situated next.
What interesting is they have many kinds of way of bathing (like normal bath, outside bath, steam bath, mud bath, sand bath and drinking bath←just some of those. Not all).

Waterfall bath (Taki-yu)
Known as Utase yu(hitting bath). Good for lower back pain, joint pain, or stiff neck because of the kinetic energy gives the effect of massage and make the part of body warm. First, take a normal bath and make the painful part warm. Then put the towel on your painful part, and hit the waterfall on it. Hit for 2-3mins for beginning. 10-15mins will be effective when you get used to it.

Mud bath (Doro-yu)
It is the hot spring contains mud which has great mineral. We can soak our body in that or spread the mud on our skin. They are good at making us warm and good for high blood pressure, neuralgia and diabetes.

Sand bath (Suna-yu)
It is a kind of medical treatment of sweat. Cover whole yourself except your face with sand which has been warm up with heat of hot spring, and furthermore it gives your body the warm stimulation by the pressure of sand. Better to have one time a day for 15-20mins. Good for neuralgia, lower back pain and the stiffness.

Steam bath (Mushi-yu)
Bathing with steam of hot spring from under the floor. It will help you to recover from your fatigue by sweating and metabolism. Kannawa Mushi-yu use emitter which has 75℃〜80℃, and Shibaseki Onsen has about 55℃. It is best to have 10-15min.

Drinking hot spring (Nomi-yu)
Some hot springs are drinkable. Good for stomach.
